Planting the Seeds of Environmental Responsibility
Sprouts! Owner, Sharon Quercioli, Creates a Coloring Book to Teach the Importance of Recycling Ink and Toner Cartridges
The cartridge aftermarket has a grass-roots supporter who wants to see remanufacturers thrive from the ground up. Planting the seeds of responsible recycling is Sharon Quercioli, owner and mastermind of Sprouts! Making Ideas Bloom, which designs and distributes recycled seed-filled paper that produces real flowering plants when soaked in water and submerged in soil.
Quercioli’s fertile brain has brought to bloom a new special publication highlighting the virtues of cartridge recycling. It’s a coloring book, aimed at young people but delightful to readers of all ages. The coloring book, with its bold pictures and simple text, encourages the adoption of good habits involving ink and toner cartridge reuse.
The publication took root during Quercioli’s encounters with fundraisers for various charitable organizations. “I created this coloring book because I had dealt with childrens’ charities and schools,” through which she learned that cartridge collection is an easy and quick way to raise funds, says Quercioli.
Although it is aimed at children, her coloring book plants the seeds of environmental responsibility in any reader. The book features “talking cartridges” as characters who learn the facts and benefits of cartridge recycling—such as “it takes over 10 centuries for plastics used in inkjets and laser cartridges to decompose” and “Isn’t it a shame that less than 5% of all empty ink cartridges are currently being recycled?”
Quercioli, a former vice president of Static Control and owner of two other businesses before Sprouts!, will have her coloring book available soon. She took a prototype to the International Imaging Technology Council in Spring 2005 and will be introducing the finished product at Recharger Magazine’s World Expo 2005 in August. Be sure to catch Quercioli there and see the great ideas growing at Sprouts!
